NFFL Rulebook- Table Of Contents

Hi all,

This page will not be fully functional for a couple of more months while the rulebook continues to remain 'under construction'.  Let's all hope to avoid a Big Dig situation...

Below, each line starting with 'Section...' should be an active link to that portion of the rulebook.  Sections one through three should all be active links by the end of this week (May 1 - May 7).  The other sections will get filled in based on the rough outline over the next several weeks.

As always, fire ideas or comments my way.

NFFL Rulebook Section IV- Starting Lineups

Section IV- Starting Lineups
A. Weekly Starting Lineup

Each NFFL starting lineup must have nine active players.  The starting lineup is composed of the following positions:

1 Quarterback
2 Running Backs
2 Wide Receivers
1 Tight End
1 Wide Receiver or Tight End
1 Wide Receiver, Tight End, or Running Back
1 Wide Receiver, Tight End, Running Back, or Quarterback

Owners may fill those above positions in any way that they wish.

B. Communication of roster decisions

Owners can declare a starting lineup in one of two ways.  First, the owner can use the features supported by the host website to make adjustments to the starting lineup.

Second, the owner can communicate directly with the opponent.  It is recommended that the owner communicate in a form that leaves a time stamped record, such as a text message or email.  In the event of such communication, the commissioner should be notified so that the required lineup adjustments can be made on the host site.

C. Starting lineup submitting deadline

The deadline to include any player in a starting lineup is kickoff of that player's game.  Once a player's game begins, that player cannot be removed from the starting lineup.  In addition, any player whose NFL team has begun play cannot be added to the starting lineup.

D. Exceptions

There are two notable 'exceptions' to the deadline described in Section 4.C above.

The first involves the roster position for a given player.  Although players must be assigned to a specific starting linuep slot on the host website, any player whose game has already started can be moved within a starting lineup to fill a different position for which he is eligible.

The second exception involves inactive players, including those who are officially declared 'healthy scratches' by their team on game day, are on IR, or are on a bye week.  Inactive players are never considered 'submitted' to a starting lineup, even if their team has kicked off for that week and the player's roster position is 'locked' by the host website, because their inactive status eliminates the possibility of their participation in the game.

Therefore, any player listed on the host website as being submitted to a starting lineup can be removed and replaced with any player whose NFL team has not yet kicked off in their game for that week. Decisions to make such changes should be communicated in the manner described in Section 4.B.

E. Conditional replacement rule

NFFL teams are permitted to announce, in advance, their preferences for the replacement of players who may be declared inactive by their NFL teams in a 'game time' decision.  The purpose of the rule is to allow NFFL teams to maintain fully competitive lineups without forcing the owner to remain on stand-by while an NFL team waits to finalize a decision.

Therefore, an inactive player can only be replaced in a manner consistent with Section 4.C above. That is, the replacement player cannot be any player whose NFL team would have already kicked off by the time the original starting player is declared inactive.

The commissioner reserves the right to step in and make an exception to this rule if unforeseen circumstances alter the kickoff time of a given NFL game.

NFFL Rulebook: Section III: Scoring

Section III- Scoring
A. Scoring Criteria

NFFL players score points in the following ways:

*6 points for a touchdown scored
*4 points for a touchdown pass
*1 point for every 25 passing yards
*1 point for every 10 rushing yards
*1 point for every 10 receiving yards
*2 points for every two-point conversion scored
*1 point for every two-point conversion pass

B. Scoring Philosophy

The NFFL does not allow any individual player to post a negative score.  The league recognizes the apparent contradiction of including games where a player posted negative yardage as part of the keeper value calculation yet not allowing those same players to score 'less' than zero points in a given week.  Scoring calculated in this way simply reinforces the emphasis placed on avoiding negative weekly scores ahead of other considerations.

In the interest of maintaining whole-number (integer) scores, the NFFL does not recognize decimal point scoring.

Scoring is meant to reflect what happened in actual NFL games. Therefore, the NFFL will recognize adjustments to statistics determined in the days following the conclusion of NFL games.  In order to minimize confusion, the NFFL will recognize scoring updates and stats adjustments as posted by the host website (currently Yahoo).

However, in the interest of maintaining the excitement of watching games unfold live on fall weekends, the NFFL will consider adjustments to the above scoring criteria described above in the event that scoring updates become a frequent disruption to determining winners/losers in our weekly matchups.

NFFL Rulebook: Section II: Rosters

Section II- Rosters
A. Rostered players

A player is considered 'rostered' if they are retained as a keeper, purchased at the auction, selected in the rookie draft, or signed off the in-season waiver wire.  At the end of each season, all players lose their 'rostered' status and only those players who are either keeper-eligible or 'rights only' remain in the control of their NFFL team for the offseason period.

Please see section (...) for a definition of keeper-eligible and rights-only players.

B. Injured Reserve exception

Please note that at no point during the season will a player placed on injured reserve ('IR') count toward the roster size.

A player is eligible for the IR by meeting these two criteria:

*They are on a real-life NFLinjured reserve
*They have been on an NFFL roster for at least one week

NFFL teams may place players on IR in one of two ways.  First, a team may utilize the IR feature supported by the host website.

Second, a player may be released directly into the waiver wire along with an announcement from the owner that the player is being placed on IR.  This may be done by owners who wish to fill the roster spot prior to the player's formal designation by his NFL team.  However, if the owner is mistaken and the player returns to an active game day roster during that same NFL season, the player is considered a free-agent and the owner loses his rights to that player for the upcoming season.

C. NFFL Roster Requirements

Below are the NFFL roster requirements.  Please note that, depending on the time of the season, the requirements change slightly.

Keeper finalization date until start of the auction...18 player maximum.
-> No NFFL team is allowed to enter the auction with more than 18 keeper players. This limit does not include players who are 'rights only'.

At the conclusion of the auction...18 player minimum AND 18 player maximum.
-> Keepers placed on IR count toward the auction salary but do not count toward the roster limit.

At the conclusion of the rookie draft...25 player minimum.
-> Teams with fewer than seven rookie draft choices will be awarded supplemental draft choices until they reach the roster minimum.

At the start of the first waiver period until the end of the season...25 player maximum.
-> Once the season concludes, roster totals are not considered until next season's keeper finalization date.

Please note that the only period of time during which an NFFL team may carry over 25 players is from the end of the rookie draft until Labor Day.  On Labor Day, the league waiver wire opens and all teams must reduce their rosters to meet the 25 player maximum (IR players excepted).

NFFL Rulebook: Section I: League Structure

Section I- League Structure
A. Membership

The Norwood Fantasy Football League (NFFL) is comprised of twelve members.  Each member who finished the prior season retains a place in the league by paying the entry fee to the treasurer by Draft Day or by making appropriate alternate arrangements with the treasurer.

Replacement of departing members is determined on a case by case basis.  New candidates for league membership should be presented as early as possible with an eye toward confirming a new member by August 1st of the coming season.

In the event that a vote is needed, a final list of candidates will be compiled and the candidate receiving a majority of votes will join the league.  If no majority is reached, the candidate receiving the fewest votes will be removed and the vote taken again.  The commissioner will break any ties during the process.

B. Entry Fee

The entry fee for the 2015 NFFL season was $150 per team.  The current prize breakdown is as follows:

*70% of prize pool for the winner of the Super Bowl
*30% of prize pool for the Regular Season Champion (first place finish in the league standings)

The prize pool is currently set at $1100.

Please note that dividing the prize money for the Super Bowl is allowed if the two finalists agree on a division before the start of the contest.  In the event that such a decision is reached, the treasurer must be notified by both participants in the same manner that all parties in a trade notify the commissioner.

In addition, the league is committed to meeting the following annual expenses:

$30 for a Super Bowl ring
$10 for an update to the Super Bowl trophy
$100 donation for hole sponsorship in The Kibby Cup

Additional money spent at the discretion of the treasurer during league-wide events is deducted from the prize pool.  Any money leftover at the end of the league season is carried over into the following year as a surplus. The matter of spending that surplus is determined by a majority vote.

week 5 news and notes

NFFL week 5 recap

Good one this week with power rankings chaos, trades, and general MNF madness…

#1 Arbo 104, Tighe 90
Arbo takes care of business in week one as disputed #1 ranked squad by dispatching a Tighe team in trade transition.  Cooks might have been in the running to start ahead of Moncrief or Wright and each call would have made an impact- a good sign going forward but a tough pill to swallow at present.

Arbo was paced by a big Gates showing and, quite frankly, I am not buying.  But who knows?  We all understood TE as a strength for this squad so the output is fully deserved.

Sean 104, Chessman 71
Sean continues his surge as he moves atop the league at 4-1.  I look at his team now and see six questionable right up top- so all business as usual- the 30 spot from Eli set the tone.

Wiseman’s post trade performance remains similar to his pre-trade showing- one more, perhaps, before wrapping it up for 2015?  Eifert may have emerged as a big piece looking ahead and CJ Anderson is a good lottery ticket to have if more trade bait is needed later.

Curran 85, Nemo 79
Three tough ones in a row for Father Coffee but he pulls out a W here behind his usual suspects.  The Edelman touchdown really was the difference, and in a big way, while Hill is really causing that panic button to go off.

Injuries have begun to conspire with bye weeks to keep Nemo on the losing streak despite a good shot to sneak past Curran.  Getting things going will be very tough with both Ivory and Lynch out and that is likely to write the story here for 2015 unless things are shaken up in a big way.

Lee 99, Concannon 86
Lee moves to 4-1 here with a big showing from Rawls and the return to form of Bell.  The Foles thing, though…

The commish drops his second in a row after butchering a WR decision.  Tough swing but hoping to get back on track this week.  We will certainly need more than 24 points from QB, though.

TMac 87, Thompson 84
The parade might be on pause for Thompson as the Annual Julio Jones injury arrives.  Good balance throughout the squad here but not enough to edge TMac.  Has Bortles earned a full time roll ahead of the struggling Smitty?

Foster is still shaking off the rust and the nagging injuries are a concern.  There is also the Morris thing- but for now, this was a big W and provides some good forward momentum.

DFlam 100, Malinn 93
Becks returns to form to haunt his former owner here to help Flam overcome some really shaky RB play.  Vereen made a nice showing and perhaps a deal involving one of those WRs is on the cards.

Malinn is always going for it or totally blowing it up and this week is the latter- but with so much turmoil in the league a good deal may be hard to find.  We’ll keep an eye on things for now.  Seeing Murray and Forsett team up for big points was an encouraging trend.

Trade and waiver analysis
*Tighe trades RB C.J. Anderson, QB Mike Vick, and WR Michael Floyd to Thompson for RB Giovani Bernard and RB Josh Robinson

This one breaks down fairly simply- tends to happen when a top team deals with a bottom one- Tighe picks up Bernard, who has been a fairly consistent ten points or so, in exchange for two struggling but relatively well regarded talents in Anderson and Floyd.  Wiseman picks up a needed QB in Vick and Tighe gets some potential future value- although very much speculative- in Robinson.

I think the winners/losers here will come down to whether Anderson hits his auction value at some point- but even then, if Tighe gets what he came for (that consistency from Bernard) then it would be hard to fault him for pulling the plug so quickly on the highly rated Anderson.

Week 6 preview
1pm games
Chessman v Concannon / Nemo v Malinn / DFlam v Sean

Who is #1???
#1 Arbo v TMac
Thompson v Curran

Two games here involving the controversial power ranking #1 squads- the committee labeled Curran #1, causing the commissioner to pull out the invisible rulebook and declare that such moves were not permitted.

Arbo is off to a good start through Ingram so TMac will need some big showings- GRONK!- to make up ground.  Meanwhile, Thompson is headed in the right direction with nearly 30 via his Falcons- Curran will call on his own QB/WR combo Sunday night to straighten things up.

…we hope not Lee…
Tighe v Lee

Tighe takes his turn at Lee here and we may finally see him pickup that long hinted at L due to a dreadful start out of Coleman.  Freeman continues to be something else- touchdown dependent, maybe, but more like he can be depended on for touchdowns given his recent run.
